Hawkesley in Birmingham is to receive £20m in funding over the next decade through the Government’s ‘pride of place’ programme.

Birmingham Northfield MP Laurence Turner welcomed the funding, which will provide £2m a year intul 2035 for supporting local jobs, community facilities, green spaces and measures to make the area safer and stronger.

The funding will be distributed to the local authority and an independent board made up of the MP, local councillors and community leaders will determine how the funding is spent.

Turner said: “It’s a historic day for Hawkesley. This £20m investment will change lives for the better in one of the most deprived parts of Birmingham. Crucially, the funds will be spent on the communities’ priorities.

“I promised last year to fight for every part of the constituency. I’m delighted that Labour in government is putting real money into an area that has been neglected by politicians for too long.

“I will work with all parts of the community in the months and years ahead to make sure this money benefits as many people as possible.”
