Birmingham Botanical Gardens has secured £9.075 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support its landmark restoration project, Growing Our Green Heritage.
Resolve critical issues
The funding means over 90% of the project’s required costs are now covered. The plans will resolve critical infrastructure issues and restore the site’s historic Grade II-listed glasshouses.
Over the next four and a half years, the gardens will see improved facilities for visitors, and expand access to education, horticulture and nature.
Backed by local politicians
Edgbaston MP Preet Kaur Gill, who backed the bid, said: “I am delighted to see this investment coming to such a wonderfully important heritage asset. It’s so important our community has a space like this to engage with plants, biodiversity and our heritage.”
The Gardens, which mark their bicentenary in 2032, have also received major support (£8m) from charitable trusts including The Garfield Weston Foundation and The Julia Rausing Trust.
To preserve the ‘historic estate’
Chair Sue Beardsmore said the funding “will preserve this historic estate and iconic glasshouses for future generations” and called it “a unique opportunity to reconnect people with nature.”
