Autumn menu at Bistro du Vin

Ben Hare, Hotel du Vin Birmingham’s wine expert, explains the Cairanne white to his dinner guests.

Joue de Boeuf Bourguignonne is arguably the star – albeit not for vegetarians – of Bistro du Vin’s new autumn menu.

While adding in a layer of winter warmth for the darker, colder months ahead, the list of choices at Hotel du Vin Birmingham’s flagship restaurant retains reliable classics like filet steak and salade maison.

Delightful wines by Boutinot

Each dish comes with suggested wines to pair it with, supplied to Hotel du Vin by the experts at Boutinot.

One stand-out wine on offer at Bistro du Vin is the Cairanne 2023, a white made by Eric Monnin in France’s Rhone region.

A blend of Grenache (70%), Roussanne (20%) and Clairette (10%) grapes, this is divine on its own or with, say, a Saumon Fume starter.

Joue de Boeuf Bourguignonne a crowd favourite

Around the table of eight on this occasion, several diners opted for the Boeuf Bourguignonne and were joyous about it.

This reporter, however, plumped for filet steak cooked bleu (rarer than rare for those not in the know).

Filet steak – bleu …

It was melt-in-the-mouth. Utterly stunning.

White port and tonic, anyone?

As were various pre-dinner aperitifs on Hotel du Vin’s highly creative and ever-evolving Bubble Louge bar menu – including the white port and tonic.

No, me neither. But seriously, give it a go. You won’t look back. Santé!
