A bevy of Birmingham-based barristers will next week trek 100km across the Sahara Desert in a bid to raise £100,000 for a leukaemia charity.

The six legal practitioners from St Philips Chambers along with their CEO, Joe Wilson, will join 30 others on the gruelling five-day walk in support of Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Carter the Brave, named after teenage leukaemia sufferer Carter Chatting.

“On the eve of our flight to Marrakesh we’ve raised about £80,000 in total but we’re targeting £100,000, which will be a grand per kilometre through one of the most unforgiving landscapes in the world,” said Joe.

“We’re bracing ourselves for extreme heat in the day, 40 degrees C or above, and sub-zero nights. It’s going to be tough but so worth it when we consider the life-saving purpose.”

Carter the Brave is a charity set up by Lucy and Matt Chatting, from Lichfield, whose son Carter, 13, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2016.

His mother started fundraising while Carter was an in-patient on the cancer ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he underwent years of gruelling treatment before going into remission in 2019.

“If ever we start feeling sorry for ourselves next week, we’ll remember Carter’s bravery and resilience in far tougher circumstances, which is an inspiration for all of us,” added Joe.
