A West Midlands tech leader has been recognised by Aston University for his impact on the region’s digital economy.

’Fastest growing digital economy’

Yiannis Maos MBE has been awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration, celebrating his “tireless” work growing the UK’s fastest-growing digital economy and his role in creating a more inclusive tech ecosystem.

The same week saw a portrait of Maos unveiled at the Centrala Gallery in Digbeth, recognising his role as founder of TechWM and a champion of talent, innovation and growth.

Commitment to innovation, diversity and social mobility

“It’s an incredible honour to be recognised by Aston University, an institution I’ve long admired for its commitment to innovation, diversity, and social mobility,” said Maos.

“This week has been deeply humbling and I share this recognition with the many amazing people I’ve worked with over the years.”

Speaking at the university’s graduation ceremony, Professor Damien Foster, Dean of the School of Computer Science and Digital Technologies, said: “Yiannis is a visionary leader who has shaped the technological landscape of both the West Midlands and the United Kingdom. Over two decades, he has been a tireless advocate for innovation, inclusion and regional growth.”

Technology leader of the year

Earlier this year, Maos was also named West Midlands Technology Leader of the Year. His organisation, TechWM, supports more than 1,000 businesses and advises local and national government on digital strategy.

Maos was awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to the technology sector and the West Midlands community.
