A 98th-minute goal from Lyndon Dykes sealed a thrilling win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park – sending 7,000 travelling Bluenoses into fits of ecstasy.
The Blues went down 0-1 to a Todd Cantwell strike early in the second half, but they never stopped believing.
In the dying seconds of normal time, Ethan Laird was clobbered in the box. Moments later Jay Stansfield equalised from the spot.
Then, in the eighth minute of 11 added on, Dykes did the business.
Chris Davies, Birmingham City coach, said: “It was a massive three points for us. I felt throughout the game we were the better team, we didn’t create loads of chances, but we were solid defensively and had a lot of the ball, and I felt it would open up as the game went on.
“I was really disappointed to go a goal down of a set piece, but to have that moment for our fans, to get back in the game with the penalty and then to win it in the last minute, made for an incredible afternoon.
“We showed our quality. We looked fit and strong, when there was a chance to counter attack we did it, and when there was a chance to press, we did it.
“When we had the ball, we were switching sides and trying to progress, so it was all the good things that we work on.
“But there was something tangible, that character, that side that came out which is probably the most important part of football, and we showed it.
“There were six red shirts bursting out there, but I love that about us. The determination, the desire, and the belief that they wanted to win it.”
Davies thanks fans
This was the first win of the new season for the Blues, now in the Championship.
And Davies was sure to thank the travelling support who never stopped roaring their lads on.
“We heard them. Even at 1-0 down they were singing louder than ever. That’s the team, and the club, everyone together, and that pushes us on,” said the happy Blues gaffer.
