Birmingham City FC booked its promotion back to the Championship last night with a 1-2 win over Peterborough United.
Goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman brought up a 29th league win of the season for Chris Davies’s team.
With six league games still to play and a Wembley final this weekend, last night’s news goes some way to consigns the disappointment of relegation last season to the annuls of history.
More than 4,000 Bluenoses were at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, in Peterborough, to celebrate the club’s return to tier two.
“I’m as happy as I can possibly be,” said Davies after the match.
“The scenes at the end and the celebrations, I’m so proud of the players, what they’ve given the fans, it’s a special night that will live with me forever.
“The expectation has been there right from the very first second I joined the club. For the players, every game they have been expected to win and that’s not easy. There are not many teams, if any, in England that have had that this season.
“For me it means the world, and when I became manager of this club I dreamed of making the fans proud of their club, basically give them memories and moments that they can cherish, and tonight was one of those.
“I’ve said before, the club has suffered enough, so you enjoy the good times and celebrate the good times.
“I always remember the first day I joined the club I was told by the historian that the club had lost more games in the last five seasons than any team in England. And I straight away thought to myself that next season let’s make sure we win more games than any team in England.
“It’s been a great journey so far and it couldn’t have gone any better.”
