Birmingham has been chosen to host the prestigious European Robotics Forum (ERF) in 2027, beating European capitals including Brussels, Zurich and Belgrade.
The event, seen as the most influential gathering of robotics professionals in Europe, will welcome over 1,500 delegates from across the globe to the ICC Birmingham from March 1 to 5.
The win is a significant coup for the West Midlands, with the forum expected to deliver a £1.55 million boost to the local visitor economy.
It also reinforces the region’s growing reputation as a centre for advanced manufacturing, innovation and technology.
Backed by a powerful regional bid team led by the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry and the University of Birmingham, the campaign received more than 50 letters of support – including endorsements from Lord Patrick Vallance, Birmingham City Council, and the West Midlands Combined Authority.
“This is a true recognition of our region’s world-class innovation and industrial strength,” said Councillor Sharon Thompson, deputy leader of Birmingham City Council.
The ERF has previously been held in cities such as Odense, Rimini and Stuttgart.

This marks the first time the event will be hosted in England, bringing together researchers, engineers, entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers to discuss the future of robotics in sectors including healthcare, sustainable manufacturing and smart infrastructure.
Professor Samia Nefti-Meziani OBE, of the University of Birmingham, described the event as “a profound moment” for the city.
“Birmingham is fast emerging as a global hub in robotics and AI. Hosting ERF2027 will only accelerate our progress,” she said.
With industry tours planned at leading firms across the region and a showcase of the UK’s thriving robotics ecosystem, ERF2027 is set to place Birmingham — and the West Midlands — firmly at the heart of Europe’s innovation agenda.
