Brum: Health tech capital

Birmingham is cementing its place as the home of British health tech innovation with a two-day conference of the greatest minds in the sector.

The West Midlands In-vitro Diagnostics (IVD) Innovation & Adoption Conference is taking place at Edgbaston Hotel, University of Birmingham (UoB), on July 17 and 18.

Aim to ‘snowball development’ – Prof. Alex Richter

Professor Alex Richter, director of the Clinical Immunology Services at UoB, said: “We are bringing together health systems leaders, academia, the NHS and industry to snowball the development, commercialisation and adoption of diagnostic technologies that improve patient outcomes, streamline care and enable precision medicine across this region, this country and the world.”

The Clinical Immunology Services unit, which Professor Richter leads, is the first business to move into the PHTA’s cluster of health tech businesses on UoB’s Health Innovation Campus.

‘Changing the healthcare game’

“We’re excited to move in,” said Professor Richter.

“We are doing cutting-edge work, alongside other health tech organisations which will change the healthcare game for the better. To be in a collaborative melting pot where ideas can be exchanged easily with other companies will only serve to further establish Birmingham and the West Midlands as a global leader in health tech.”

She added: “Right now in the NHS in Britain, 40% of patient volumes for autoimmune diseases come from just 4% of the population. Our goal at Clinical Immunology Services is to bring that 40% down.”
