HRH the Duchess of Gloucester has opened the new Edmonds Transplant Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Within minutes of the new centre opening, patients were benefitting from the plethora of facilities the centre has on offer ranging from consultation rooms to their state-of-the-art physiotherapy suite.
A degree of familiarity
The new centre will enable patients undergoing transplants to come to the same centre – the same part of the hospital – for each of their appointments, enabling them a degree of familiarity and comfort during what is a conventionally very challenging time.
Mike Hammond, CEO of the UHB charity, said: “Having Edmonds Transplant Centre Birmingham at Queen Elizabeth Hospital will make a massive difference for our patients locally and beyond.”
Emphasising how the centre will help push forward research in the field of transplants in the coming years.
Built using donations
Financially the centre was supported by various individuals and organisations, with the Edmond family, who own a Birmingham-based joinery and metalwork company, contributing £1m of the £4m spent on the project.
Liver transplant patient, Amy, who has used the physiotherapy facilities in the centre, said the unit helped “keep me moving and keep me going.”
