easyJet carried 1.6 million passengers in and out of Birmingham Airport (BHX) in the past 12 months – 53% up on the previous year.

This increase was enabled by the airline basing three of its aircraft at the West Midlands hub. Until March 2024 these planes had been stabled elsewhere.

Since then easyJet has doubled the number of destinations it offers from BHX – a number set to increase when it bases two more A320 Airbus aircraft there this summer.

Flights to Gran Canaria and Malta will start in May and June followed by Lanzarote in October.

Ali Gayward, easyJet UK country manager, said: “The growth of our fleet with two additional aircraft will not only support around 800 jobs but will enable us to further unlock continuing demand that we see for both leisure and business travel in the Midlands.”

Tom Screen, BHX aviation director, added: “This success is testament to easyJet’s destinations and customer service levels. We look forward to many more years of this.”

This news about easyJet comes after the airport pledged this month to put an an to the “unacceptable” queues which plagued passengers last summer following the opening of its new security hall.

Fun fact: easyJet launched services from Birmingham for the first time in December 2007, with flights from Birmingham to Geneva. Today it operates up to 300 flights a week, including offering package holidays on 36 routes in 17 countries across Europe and North Africa.
