The Birmingham Brummies speedway team, formed in 1928, will stop competing when its lease at Perry Barr stadium expires in September.

Housing plans

The site is being developed into a mix of 338 apartments and 89 town houses.

The greyhound racing at Perry Barr stadium is also set to move at the end of the summer.

Last year of speedway in Birmingham

Club co-owner Nigel Tolley said: “It’s something I never wanted to say but this will be the last year of speedway in Birmingham.”

The club has been looking at other options including the nearby Alexander Stadium without success.

The club’s Facebook page has more than 350 comments from supporters who describe themselves as “devastated” or “heartbroken.”

The state of the region’s speedway

Many speedway teams across the West Midlands have struggled, often losing their permanent homes.

Wolverhampton Speedway lost its Monmore Green stadium site in 2023.

The Cradeley Heathens speedway team folded in 1995 but was revived in 2010 when it began racing at Monmore Green. Coventry Bees stopped racing in 2016. Brandon Stadium remains derelict.

Speedway Plus has published data regarding the state of speedway across the UK.

Nationally, British speedway has experienced a decline in attendance. In 2022, an estimated 16,000 people attended live speedway events across the UK during the peak season.
