A history-making Brummie police officer turned justice and equality advocate is running the Windsor Half Marathon this Sunday to raise cash for the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV).

Birmingham-born Keith Fraser, aka “Brummie Keith,” whose parents moved to Britain from Jamaica, joined London’s Met Police in 1985 before moving to the West Midlands force in 2005, where on his retirement in 2017 he was its only serving black superintendent.

Fraser, in his late 50s, has since gone on to hold senior governmental roles, including Chair of the Youth Justice Board and commissioner on the UK’s Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities.

This weekend he heads south to Berkshire to don his trainers for a 13-mile run through Windsor Great Park to support the NCDV.

“I’m raising for the NCDV because its services are, sadly, in increasingly high demand,” he said.

“Domestic abuse takes place behind closed doors, hidden from view in many cases, and the harm caused is high,  with women and children predominantly the ones suffering.

“NCDV provides a completely free service for those who need it and they help raise awareness. Please show your support for NCDV’s vision of making domestic abuse socially unacceptable.”

The NCDV is a not-for-profit community interest company (CIC) that helps people obtain domestic abuse injunctions through the civil courts, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or disability – or whether they are eligible for Legal Aid funding or can afford a solicitor.

NCDV triages thousands of referrals each year and those who cannot be passed to one of their panel solicitors are assisted by its pro bono service. NCDV makes no charge for these services, but relies on the help of the community to ensure it can help as many people as possible.

Additionally, NCDV train 12,000 police and other professionals annually to better understand the benefits and criteria for civil injunctions. It does this completely free or charge, to help raise awareness and further NCDV’s vision of making domestic abuse socially unacceptable.
