Khalid Abdalla, star of the Netflix series ‘The Crown,’ has publicly backed Birmingham’s striking bin workers.
Abdalla, who played Princess Di’s lover Dodi al Fayed in the series, posed with a poster expressing solidarity.
This support comes after Birmingham reggae band UB40 backed the workers.
Downed tools on March 11
Bin workers launched an indefinite strike on March 11 after Birmingham city council’s decision to scrap the Waste Recycling and Collection Officer (WRCO) role. According to the Unite union, this move means around 170 workers are set to lose between £6,000 and £8,000 annually.
Uncollected waste continues to accumulate across the city as the strike enters its ninth week.
Financial stress
Aaron Phipps, a refuse collector at Lifford Lane, said he was “devastated” by the “financial stress it’s caused me and my family,” adding: “I came into work one day in January and was told I’d be losing £400 a month every month, permanently.
“The majority of the workforce was hit with the same news. That’s why we’re now out here on strike.
“The sooner a deal is reached, the sooner we can get back to work and bring this city back to the standards it deserves.
“I want to return to my job knowing there’s a secure framework in place – something that’ll carry me through the next 20 years of my career.”
