Upgraded model promises safer policing
Police officers across England and Wales will soon be equipped with a new generation of Taser devices after the Home Office approved the rollout of the Axon Taser 10, designed to improve accuracy, range, and safety in high-risk situations.
The new model, tested independently by the College of Policing, can fire probes at greater distances and gives officers more precise control over each shot. It also features an auditory warning designed to de-escalate incidents before force is used.
Policing Minister Sarah Jones said the upgrade would “help our police forces and properly trained officers tackle crime more effectively while maintaining public trust and accountability.”
Balancing safety and accountability
According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), Taser 10 represents a major step forward in non-lethal policing technology. Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi, the national lead for less-lethal weapons, said the weapon would provide “vital support in high-risk, fast-moving situations” while helping to de-escalate conflict.
“In 92% of cases, the presence of a Taser alone defuses danger swiftly and safely,” she said. “Accountability is paramount, and the new model reinforces our focus on public safety and trust.”
A joint implementation plan between the NPCC and College of Policing will guide officer training and deployment. Each police force will be responsible for authorising and equipping officers who volunteer to carry the device.
Tested and approved
The College of Policing confirmed that the Taser 10 underwent “rigorous scrutiny, independent testing and medical assessments” before approval. Chief Constable Sir Andy Marsh, CEO of the College, said the weapon “must be used wisely and effectively.”
“Our updated guidance ensures officers are trained to the highest standards,” he said. “This is about improving safety while using the minimum force necessary – and maintaining public trust.”
Part of safer streets mission
Axon, the US-based manufacturer, said the approval marked “a vital part of the technology toolkit” for UK policing, alongside body-worn video and digital evidence management systems.
Alex Lowe, Axon’s regional director for the UK and Ireland, said: “We welcome the government’s commitment to giving officers the tools they need to protect themselves and the public.”
The Taser 10 is now available for purchase, marking a new phase in British policing – one that promises to strengthen officer safety while keeping public confidence firmly in sight.
