West Midlands News has officially launched – and its purpose is simple: news, views and interviews.
WM News promises fresh insights on politics and world affairs, and to portray the West Midlands, Britain’s main economic engine outside London and the South East, in a positive light with a focus on tech, business and life sciences.
“We want to counter the tide of clickbait and negativity with trusted news, views and interviews,” said Simon Evans, editor of WM News.
“Some people have called us mad for trying, likening it to David v Goliath. Well, we’re David, the young pup with limited resources but big ideas and plenty of ambition, so watch this space.”
Next step: get categorised by Google as a ‘news site’
The publication is starting off as an online portal – www.westmidlands.news – which, once formally categorised as a ‘news site’ by Google, hopes to attract advertisers. It has longer-term ambitions to harness video and grow beyond its current format, possibly beyond the West Midlands.
WM News is owned by the One Thousand Trades Group of companies, whose chief executive is Professor Paul Cadman.
“Our goal is to cover sectors of the economy which we feel don’t get the air-time they deserve: innovation, technology, life sciences, medical advances as well as sport, politics, individual people and commenting on events from around the world,” said Paul.
‘A fascination with people’ – Prof Paul Cadman
“‘News, views and interviews’ is our slogan, which is driven by a fascination with people. People who achieve, people who fall down and get back up, people who lead and do great things in business or on the sports field. People who are the beating heart of the West Midlands.”
Paul added: “Get involved. Read our content. Tell us what you like and what you don’t. Give us the stories you want us to cover. Follow us on LinkedIn, Instagram and X, and come on the journey with us.”
