RIP Pope Francis

Pope Francis died today aged 88.

The news was confirmed by the Vatican and comes after the pontiff failed to recover from pneumonia.

The Argentine was the first Jesuit to be Pope.

Fought for poor and marginalised

He served for 12 years during which time he became known for prioritising the poor, defending the cause of the marginalised and on occasion incurring the ire of conservative Catholics.

Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, of the Holy Roman Church, announced the death of Pope Francis on the Vatican website.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” he said.

”At 7.35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was devoted to service to the Lord and His Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love the One and Triune God”.

Meloni tribute

Georgia Meloni, prime minister of Italy, said on Twitter (X): “This news saddens us deeply, because a great man and a great pastor has left us.

“I had the privilege of enjoying his friendship, his advice and his teachings, which never failed even in moments of trial and suffering.

“His teaching and his legacy will not be lost. We greet the Holy Father with hearts full of sadness, but we know that he is now in the peace of the Lord.”

In the coming weeks the process will begin to find and elect the 268th Pope to succeed Francis
