New base signals Romanian commitment to build closer ties with the UK
The Romanian government has opened a new consulate in Birmingham – its fourth on British soil after London, Manchester and Edinburgh.
The facility will serve more than 300,000 Romanian nationals living in the West Midlands, East Midlands, Gloucestershire and Wales.
Mihaela Savu, the first Consul General of Romania in Birmingham, said the new base, which is now open to the public, underscores Romania’s long-term dedication to the community as well as its commitment to build closer ties with the UK and its regions.

“Establishing a Romanian consulate here in Birmingham is an opportunity to touch so many lives and help people, as we want to bring a meaningful and long-lasting contribution to the wellbeing of the Romanian community here,” Mihaela told WM News.
“Building trust is among our key objectives, by reaching out to our communities while underscoring the importance of partnerships we build with the local authorities and institutions.
“The Romanian people here represent an important part of our nation’s heritage, and our aim is to help them thrive and highlight their significance to the diversity of this region.
“We are here to support the interests of the community, as well as to actively engage in socio-cultural, economic and educational initiatives that can lead to a better understanding and recognition of the community’s relevance and contribution within the broader societal landscape.”
WM News was given a tour of the newly refurbished 7,300 sq ft, grade II-listed office located on Colmore Row, in the heart of Birmingham’s central business district.
While its formal opening will take place at a later date, the facility is now operational with a team of staff already offering consular services.
Romania is the latest in a growing list of nations to establish consular bases in Birmingham.
