Plans to extend Birmingham tram network out to the site of the proposed new Sports Quarter have been approved.

Birmingham Eastside extension

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) said it was critical trams run to the east of the city, where £3bn is being invested in a world-class complex which will include a new 60,000-seater stadium for Birmingham City FC.

The Eastside tram extension will also connect to HS2’s Curzon Street station. WMCA approved £107m in funding for the work. Work is set to start in 2026.

Unlocking opportunity for the city

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker said: “This line is about connecting people in Birmingham and the Black County to opportunity. It’s already drawing in major investment and helping breathe new life into this part of the city.”
