Ukraine: Russia deploys laser weapons

Russian forces have begun using a Chinese laser weapon to target drones in Ukraine, according to footage shared on pro-Russian Telegram channels.

The laser, known as ‘Silent Hunter’, is believed to have been supplied by China. The system is designed to detect and destroy low-altitude aerial threats such as unmanned drones at a low cost of $10 per shot.

The high-energy weapon can penetrate a 5mm thick piece of steel from over a kilometre away, making it a highly effective countermeasure against low-altitude modern drones.

Video clips appear to show the high-energy laser mounted on a vehicle, disabling Ukrainian drones in flight. Defence analysts say it could mark the first known use of a Chinese-directed energy weapon in the conflict.

Ukraine claims the technology has been used before

Ukraine has alleged that the technology has been used by the Russian military since October 2024.

If verified, the deployment of Silent Hunter would represent a shift in battlefield tactics — and an escalation in the types of technology being used.

Drone warfare increasingly common

Ukraine’s sophisticated drone attack against Russian aviation assets over the weekend has reiterated the value and vital role of drones and the consequent countermeasures within modern warfare.

Drones have played a major role in the war since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022. As each side adapts, counter-drone measures like this will likely become more common — and more advanced.
