A 40-year-old pedestrian died last night after a collision with a police car in Birmingham.

The tragic incident took place on Yardley Road, near its junction with Florence Road, in Acocks Green, just before 7pm.

The man struck by the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The marked police car was responding to a 999 call following a report of a man carrying knives on Warwick Road, Acocks Green, when the collision occurred.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “The family of the man who died is being supported, and we are liaising with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The two officers in the vehicle were not hurt.”

Anyone with information, including dashcam or other footage, has been asked to contact police on 101 or Live Chat, quoting log 4726 of March 19.

Other officers attended the report of the man with the knives, but there was no sign of any disorder on arrival, police said.
