Private Harry Johnson, 19, from the 2nd Infantry Training Battalion, died following a physical training session at Vimy Barracks, Catterick, on July 24, the Ministry of Defence said.

A promising career cut short

Pte Johnson, a proud Yorkshireman, joined the Army on 13 April 2025 and had recently completed Basic Training, earning the title of Best Shot in his platoon.

He was part of Bruneval Platoon within the Parachute Regiment Training Company and was known for his exceptional work ethic, determination, and humility.

His commanding officers described him as a soldier of rare potential, admired by peers and trainers alike. Despite his short time in service, he had already made a lasting impact.

A soldier of character and commitment

Lieutenant Colonel Ben Jesty, Commanding Officer of the 2nd Infantry Training Battalion, said: “We are heartbroken. Harry represented the best of his generation – fit, disciplined and selfless. He had already shown significant potential and was tipped to be a future P Company Champion.”

Platoon Commander Lt Toby Staker added: “He carried himself with pride and confidence well beyond his years. His humour and loyalty touched everyone.”

Loved by friends and respected by trainers

Training staff and fellow recruits praised Harry’s warmth, selflessness and humour.

Sergeant Foreman called him “one of Britain’s finest,” while Corporal Walker remembered his resilience and his ability to lift others through the toughest days of training.

His fellow recruits recalled his deep love for his family and girlfriend Abira, his skill as a marksman, and the joy he brought to those around him.

A life that will not be forgotten

Though his Army journey had only just begun, Private Johnson lived by the values of service, integrity and camaraderie. His loss is deeply felt across the Armed Forces community.

He will be remembered not only for the soldier he was becoming but for the kind, funny and caring young man he already was.
