St Basils running despite fire

Homeless charity remains operational despite blaze destroying office

Young homeless people can still get help from St Basils, the Birmingham charity, despite a fire forcing closure of its Youth Hub in Digbeth, it was confirmed today.

At midday yesterday (Sunday) a blaze tore through a derelict building on Heath Mill Lane, spreading to St Basils’ annex building next door. It was destroyed.

While the adjoining Youth Hub is still intact, it remains closed today while St Basils carries out checks to ensure it is safe for use.

St Basils said in a statement: “Thankfully no-one has been hurt, which is the most important thing. But our Youth Hub in Birmingham will be closed on Monday, so we can survey if there is any damage. If you require any support during this time we ask that you contact the youth line on 0300 303 0099.”

Young people in need can call St Basils youth line on 0300 303 0099

Barrie Hodge, head of fundraising and comms for St Basils, said: “The message is – we are still here for those who need help. If you are a young person (aged 16 to 25) in need of support, call our youth line, 0300 303 0099.”

The destroyed annex building was used by around 30 staff including those in its youth outreach, IT and fundraising teams.

It is understood St Basils has insurance cover.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Barrie added: “The main thing is no-one was hurt. Buildings can be replaced. People can’t.”

St Basils is a charity and a housing association which has supported homeless people aged 16 to 25 for more than 50 years.
