Britain: A holiday for everyone

Scrambling up mountains, walking through forests and meandering through fields are all part of our instinct as humans. So, why don’t more people embrace it?

Nights out to nights outside

From a young age, I’ve loved the outdoors. The fresh air, freedom and sense of accomplishment make it all worthwhile.

Whilst some people my age spend all their time and money on pub crawls, nights out and alcohol (of which I must admit I don’t dislike) I prefer to go hiking up some hills or wild camping under the stars.

The reality is that there is more to life than is typically accepted within my age group due to social norms. But I love climbing up mountains and experiencing what nature has to offer. It’s the basics that we are supposed to admire as human beings.

A range of mountains to choose from

Over the last couple of years, I’ve gone up more mountains across Britain than I can keep track of, and I feel a sense of pride from doing so.

But it also has allowed me to appreciate the sheer beauty that Britain has to offer. Some of our national parks, mountains, forests, beaches and more are absolutely stunning – yet people go abroad to Spain, Italy and Greece seemingly without considering the beauty available to them right here in the UK.

Having spent time in Cornwall over the past year and Scotland, I can confirm that the UK has beautiful destinations from the south of England up to the north of Scotland.

Something for everyone

You don’t need to be at the peak of physical fitness to enjoy these scenic holidays either. The UK offers mountaineering and hiking destinations for all abilities.

Fancy a gentle coastal walk? Go to Cornwall. Fancy a hike up a hill? Go to the Shropshire hills. Fancy a scramble up a mountain with harnesses? Go to Scotland.

Back Britain

What’s more is that by going on holiday in the UK, you’re supporting British business. Rather than spending £30 in a ‘British’ bar in Benidorm with inflated tourist prices spend £20 on a cheap few pints at a little country pub with stunning views from the beer garden and support the British economy, local communities and our heritage along the way.

I’ve had holidays across the globe from Scotland to Australia and some of the best holidays I’ve had have been as simple as a sleeping bag and a bivvy bag on top of a mountain right here in the UK.

Save some money too

You don’t need to spend thousands on lavish hotels and resorts in some tourist destination in Europe, you can relax, unwind and be proud of something by merely exploring the natural beauty right here in the UK.

So next time you feel like going away. Try something new. Pack your camping gear, put on your hiking boots and start planning your walking route on OS Maps. Just remember to make sure there’s a spot for a cheeky pint along your route.
