Residents are moving into the first new homes in a new Wolverhampton council housing development.

Keon Homes, the council’s appointed construction partner, has finished seven wheelchair-accessible council bungalows on Longford Road as part of the New Park Village estate.

The properties, completed two months ahead of schedule, have top energy-efficiency ratings, boasting solar panels along with electric vehicle charging points.

All seven on of the bungalows have been allocated to existing tenants from the estate.

The rest of the development will involve demolishing outdated 1960s maisonettes and replacing them with 179 highly energy-efficient new council homes across two phases.

Enabling work is set to start in spring, followed by up to two years of construction.

The £40m scheme, funded in part by the council’s Housing Revenue Account capital budget, will deliver two-, three- and four-bedroom homes for affordable rent, plus enhanced car parking, improved public open spaces including a children’s play area, green gym and seating.

‘Best council houses I have ever seen’

Carol Mcintosh, daughter of 84-year-old Melva Mcintosh, who is moving into one of the new bungalows, said: “I never thought my mom would live in a property as beautiful as this, these are the best council houses I have ever seen.”

Councillor Steve Evans, deputy leaderof Wolverhampton council, said: “We are determined to provide new and better homes for affordable rent.

“This is just the start of things to come as part of the New Park Village regeneration masterplan.

“In the long-term, the redevelopment will contribute to the improvement of tenants’ living conditions with the provision of highly energy-efficient new homes, better play areas and green space creating an environmentally friendly estate.”
