Dudley MP backs biggest overhaul of veterinary regulation in more than 60 years
Sonia Kumar MP has welcomed landmark reforms to the veterinary sector announced by the Labour Government, saying the changes will bring clearer pricing, fairer treatment for pet owners, and stronger support for veterinary professionals across Dudley.
The reforms represent the most significant overhaul of veterinary regulation in more than six decades. They are designed to address rising costs, improve transparency for households, and modernise outdated rules governing veterinary services.
Government reforms aim to tackle rising vet costs and unclear pricing
Recent findings by the Competition and Markets Authority found that veterinary fees have risen at nearly twice the rate of inflation and could cost households up to £1 billion over the next five years.
The Government says the new measures will help end unexpected bills and opaque pricing practices, while continuing to uphold high standards of animal care and welfare.
What the veterinary reforms will mean for Dudley pet owners
For pet-owning households in Dudley, the reforms will introduce clearer prices upfront, with veterinary practices required to publish price lists for common treatments. Residents will also have greater transparency over whether their local practice is independently owned or part of a larger corporate group.
Stronger consumer protections and clearer complaint processes are intended to give pet owners greater confidence when raising concerns. Regulation of veterinary nurses and allied professionals is also expected to improve access to care and reduce delays.
How local vets and veterinary nurses will benefit from the changes
The reforms will give veterinary nurses formal legal recognition, strengthening professional identity and helping improve retention across the sector. Regulatory oversight will be extended to veterinary businesses, not just individual practitioners.
Modernised fitness-to-practise and registration systems will be introduced, alongside updated governance arrangements for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to better reflect modern healthcare standards.
Sonia Kumar MP says reforms will protect families and animal welfare
Sonia Kumar MP said: “Pets are family members for so many households in Dudley, and people deserve to know exactly what they are paying for when their animal needs care.
“These reforms will give pet owners greater confidence, clearer information and real choice, while backing the vets and veterinary nurses who do such vital work in our community.”
Public consultation launched on reforming veterinary legislation
Dudley is home to thousands of pet-owning families, as well as local veterinary practices, rescue centres and animal charities. Kumar said the reforms would help ensure high-quality care remains accessible, affordable and trusted.
The Government, through the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has launched a public consultation on reforming the Veterinary Surgeons Act, allowing both professionals and the public to help shape a modern veterinary system fit for the future.
“This is about building a veterinary sector that works for pets, owners and professionals alike,” Kumar added
