Tommy Shaw took on his toughest challenge yet to honour his mum and rebuild his own life
A 20-year-old construction worker from Stoke-on-Trent has competed in a mixed martial arts event to raise funds for the Stroke Association, inspired by his mother’s stroke in 2019.
Tommy Shaw took part in an Ultra MMA event at Fenton Manor Sports Complex after eight weeks of training at Stoke Combat Academy under coach Jack Willis.
Tommy said: “My mum had a stroke and didn’t get anywhere near enough help.
“This resulted in me and my younger siblings going into care.
“There just isn’t enough readily available care, and I do not want other families to have to go through this.”
From the cage to the podium
The experience proved transformative. Tommy overhauled his diet, took up protein shakes and healthy meal preparation and walked out to Eye of the Tiger in front of 25 friends and family.
He faced Finn Mitchell, 19, in a closely-fought bout, narrowly losing in the final 20 seconds.
He has since gone on to represent Stoke Combat Academy in K-1 kickboxing, winning a silver medal at his first tournament last month.
Tommy said: “Don’t hesitate, just sign up immediately. It had such a miraculous impact on me.”
Ultra Events has raised £43 million for charity to date. The next Stoke event takes place on July 18.
