Zoe Shears recognised for her outstanding leadership and person-centred care

Zoe Shears, home manager at Exemplar Health Care’s Maypole Grove Care Home in Birmingham, has received a prestigious Chief Nurse Adult Social Care Gold Award.

The award was presented by Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care Deborah Sturdy at The Care Show in London on 30 April 2026.

The awards celebrate exceptional contributions and leadership among social care nurses and workers nationwide.

Person-centred leadership praised

Shears was nominated by colleagues for her dedication to supporting adults with complex needs and helping them lead full, meaningful lives.

Mark Rushton, regional director for the West Midlands at Exemplar Health Care, said: “I’m thrilled to see Zoe receive this award.

“She has been dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of care since stepping into the manager role three years ago, and previously in senior nursing positions.

“She is always striving to ensure the best for the people she supports and her team, creating a home that reflects her vision and values.”

An experienced adult nurse with more than 13 years in the sector, Shears has advanced from unit manager to clinical nurse manager and now home manager.

A passion for nursing

Shears said: “Nursing has always been my passion, so achieving this award is a very proud moment. It reflects the support of an amazing team and the people we care for every day.”

One resident, Abi, gained the confidence to travel to London for parliamentary events, speak about her lived experience, and return as a panellist at The Care Show.

Abi, who initially rarely left her room, is now a service user ambassador.

She said: “I do things now that I never thought I’d be able to do.” Abi stood alongside Shears when the award was presented.

Creating a culture of excellence

Paul Moore, clinical director for Exemplar Health Care, said: “Zoe’s leadership goes beyond individual achievements. She has created a culture where people feel valued, heard, and inspired.

“She is deeply committed to research and evidence-based practice, championing initiatives such as the Vivaldi Social Care study and ensuring that lived experience is central to the work we do.

“She embodies the professionalism and values of nursing, and we are delighted to see her recognised through this award.”

Maypole Grove supports adults with complex needs to build greater independence, confidence, and quality of life.
