Richard Parker has named the Bilston-born politician to the role
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, has appointed Cllr Stephen Simkins, leader of City of Wolverhampton Council, as the region’s new Deputy Mayor.
The announcement was made as the newly constituted West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Board convened for the first time following recent local elections.
Cllr Simkins, who has represented the Bilston area as a councillor for more than two decades and has been part of the WMCA since its inception, was appointed leader of City of Wolverhampton Council in September 2023.
In his new role he will support the Mayor in championing the region’s priorities of growth, homes, jobs and transport, and serve as an ambassador for the West Midlands.
Cllr Simkins said: “It’s a massive honour to be asked to serve as Deputy Mayor of the West Midlands. As someone who grew up in Bilston and has the privilege of leading my home city of Wolverhampton, I am incredibly proud to represent the Black Country and all of the West Midlands in this role.
“The West Midlands is a place full of ambition, talent and opportunity, and I can promise everyone who calls it home that we will build on our strengths and make sure all our communities benefit from the opportunities ahead.”
A shared agenda for the region
Mayor Richard Parker said: “Cllr Simkins’ experience and commitment to the community are why I asked him to join me as Deputy Mayor.
“Together, we will work with all members of the WMCA Board to create good jobs, build affordable homes and deliver a transport system that works for everyone.”
