A tailoring house with more than 250 years of history is lending its craftsmanship to a campaign to transform healthcare in Birmingham.
Gieves & Hawkes’ Birmingham store has donated a made-to-measure suit, worth up to £1,695, to the Mud, Sweat and Cheers! charity fundraising event, organised by One Thousand Trades Group at Moseley Rugby Club on Saturday 3 October.
The event is supporting University Hospitals Birmingham Charity’s £7.2 million appeal to bring a state-of-the-art Total Body PET-CT Scanner to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
The proposed scanner could reduce scan times from around 30 minutes to as little as five, while enabling more than 2,000 additional appointments each year. It would provide clearer diagnostic information with lower radiation doses, alongside new opportunities for research and clinical trials.
Prof. Paul Cadman, CEO of One Thousand Trades Group – which is organising fundraising afternoon at Moseley Rugby Club – welcomed the donation, saying: “We’re very grateful to Gieves & Hawkes for this generous donation. It’s a fantastic prize and a great example of Birmingham businesses coming together to support better care for patients across our region.”
For the successful bidder, the donation offers a personal introduction to the craft of made-to-measure tailoring.
They will be invited to Gieves & Hawkes at The Mailbox for a consultation and fitting, creating a suit adapted to their measurements, body shape and individual preferences. The prize covers a two-piece suit, with the option to purchase a waistcoat separately if the winner would prefer a three-piece.
Behind the donation is a name whose history reaches back to 1771.
Explaining the company’s heritage and approach to fine tailoring, Max Harvey, Store Manager at Gieves & Hawkes Birmingham, said:
“Gieves & Hawkes combines two distinguished British tailoring houses: Gieves built its reputation outfitting the Royal Navy, while Hawkes became renowned for military tailoring for the British Army. The two came together in 1974, with No.1 Savile Row remaining the brand’s historic home.
“At the Gieves & Hawkes Birmingham store, that heritage is expressed through a service shaped around the individual. Made-to-measure customers can choose from an extensive collection of fine British and Italian woven cloths, then select the lining, lapels, buttons, pockets and finishing details.
“The result is a garment designed around how its owner wants to look, feel and wear it – whether for working life, a wedding or another significant occasion.”
Birmingham’s business community will have an opportunity to discover more at an exclusive in-store evening on Thursday 15 October, supported by One Thousand Trades Group.
Taking place from 6:00pm to 9:30pm, the event will welcome guests to meet Joshua Scacheri, Design Director of Gieves & Hawkes, who will share the inspiration, design and craftsmanship behind the latest collection.
Attendees will receive 15% off ready-to-wear and made-to-measure purchases on the night. In a separate prize draw, purchases of £150 or more will qualify for entry to win a made-to-measure experience worth up to £1,795.
The event takes place at Gieves & Hawkes, Unit 46, The Mailbox, Wharfside Street, Birmingham, B1 1RE. Places are limited and RSVP is required. To register interest in attending, email events@gievesandhawkes.com.
