Big green bus order

The transport minister Heidi Alexander has announced a 10-year order for zero-emissions buses, 60% of which are being built by UK-based manufacturers.

The announcement comes as the Bus Services Bill progresses through Parliament as the government tries to drive growth in green tech and improve transport services.

By 2026, figures suggest about 800 zero‑emissions buses (electric or hydrogen) will be in service across the West Midlands.

At a meeting with Metro Mayors, including Richard Parker of the West Midlands, Alexander said: “By mapping out future demand, we’re giving industry the certainty they need to grow – supporting jobs, delivering better buses for passengers, and accelerating our journey towards a cleaner, greener transport system.”

Earlier this year, the Government announced nearly £38 million to deliver 319 new zero-emissions buses across 12 cities in England by spring 2027, with each pound of funding matched by at least £3 of private investment.
