An off-duty fire fighter who saved a baby’s life was honoured yesterday.

Crew Commander Danielle Hood was visiting Sandwell Valley Country Park on November 6 last year when she spotted the tot choking in a car.

Danielle swiftly got the baby, whose face was blue, out of the car and performed back slaps until a button was dislodged from its throat.

Danielle was among several fire fighters honoured by Simon Tuhill, Chief Fire Officer, at a ceremony attended by friends and family at the West Midlands fire service headquarters on March 19.

Mr Tuhill, presenting Danielle with a CFO Commendation, said: “Her quick-thinking, decisive actions and bravery prevented a tragedy.”

He added: “The recipients have all gone above and beyond the call of duty. They are exemplars of our organisation and our values, and have helped us to deliver on our vision of making the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier.

“It is my honour to honour them. They have saved lives. They have stepped up on duty, off duty. What they have done is way more than ‘just their job’.”

This comes after West Midlands Ambulance Service told how two volunteer Community First Responders was publicly thanked by a man they revived after he suffered a heart attack in Shropshire.
