It’s traditional on this date, April 1, to play pranks on friends, family and work colleagues – but not this year.

That’s because April Fool’s Day 2025 has officially been cancelled, according to a senior source at the United Nations.

The source, close to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said: “April 1st is typically associated with practical jokes and other such levity but, owing to the fact there are so many serious things going on globally right now, a worldwide decision has been taken to cancel April Fool’s Day.”

It is understood April Fool’s Day 2026 will go ahead as normal – unless authorities make a decision to cancel it nearer the time.
