Strengthening cultural and diplomatic ties
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have begun a five-day official visit to Japan, aiming to celebrate and deepen the historic partnership between the two nations.
Their Royal Highnesses will spend September 18 to 22 in Tokyo and Osaka, with engagements spanning education, sustainability, innovation, youth opportunity and women’s leadership. The trip also supports the UK’s role at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, where the UK Pavilion will showcase British creativity and global collaboration.
Meetings with imperial family
During their stay, the royal couple will meet Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan, as well as Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino. A tree-planting ceremony at the Akasaka State Guest House will mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s 1975 state visit.
Cultural and environmental focus
Highlights include a visit to the Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena, environmental education programmes at Kasai Marine Park, and a tour of Koyasan’s Kongobuji Temple and Okunoin Cemetery. The couple will also attend a reception at the British Ambassador’s Residence to celebrate the MUSUBI Initiative, which fosters UK-Japan collaboration.
Spotlight on innovation and leadership
In Osaka, Their Royal Highnesses will tour the UK Pavilion at Expo 2025, highlighting British advances in clean energy and sustainability. The Duchess is also expected to join a UN Women panel at the Women’s Pavilion, focusing on female leadership and global opportunity.
The British Embassy in Tokyo said the visit underscores “the deep and historic ties between the UK and Japan, and our shared commitment to addressing global challenges through innovation, education and cultural exchange.”
