Healthier Heroes opens Morgan House, on Teeside, for homeless veterans

Nineteen homeless military veterans are today moving into Morgan House, a newly opened supported refuge named after a Royal Marines Commando who took his own life.

Sam Morgan, from nearby Guisborough, died aged 36 last year after a long battle with PTSD.

He left behind wife Holly and their three young children, who were at Castle Court, in the village of Boosbeck, North Yorkshire, on Saturday for the opening of the 32-bedroom facility, which local developers Keith and Laura Rutherford cleaned up and refurbished.

200 people gathered for the opening

More than 200 people gathered at Castle Court to witness its formal renaming as “Morgan House” in Sam’s honour. They were then shown around the house.

Sam’s widow Holly spoke of her and her family’s grief and loss. Local MP Luke Myer and Lord Moyor for Cleveland and Redcar, Ian Hart, were among the dignitaries who shared thoughts before Sam’s children cut a ceremonial ribbon to declare Morgan House open.

19 homeless vets moving into Morgan House

Today 17 male and two female homeless veterans took up residence in the facility, which is being run by Healthier Heroes CIC (community interest company).

Morgan House is an important step in Healthier Heroes’ ongoing mission to combat veteran homelessness and promote recovery, rehabilitation and wellbeing.

The facility will provide safe accommodation for up to 32 veterans who are either homeless or leaving the criminal justice system with nowhere to turn.

“Morgan House gives us the opportunity to provide every resident with a genuine lifeline,” said Andrew Powell, CEO of Healthier Heroes.

“Our goal is to help them rebuild their lives supporting their recovery, improving their mental health and wellbeing, and ultimately empowering them to live independently once again.”

Staffed 24/7 to support vulnerable veterans

Morgan House will be staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by a highly dedicated and skilled team offering tailored support for each veteran’s personal journey. This includes mental health support, life skills training and rehabilitation programmes designed to help individuals regain confidence and reintegrate successfully into their communities.

Healthier Heroes CIC extends heartfelt gratitude to the local community, donors, and volunteers whose generosity has transformed Morgan House from an ambitious vision into a life-changing reality. Financial contributions, donated items and countless hours of volunteer time have made this project possible.

Open to veterans across the UK

This initiative is open to veterans across the UK, and Healthier Heroes CIC is committed to working hand in hand with partners, sponsors, supporters and local government to make the UK the best place in the world to be a veteran. It aims to ensure no veteran is left homeless and that every individual receives the skills, mindset and opportunity to rebuild their life.
