A viral moment where his dad stole one of his nuggets led to Rory landing the role

A four-year-old Black Country boy has landed his dream role as Aldi’s official chicken nugget taster.

Rory Smith, from Tividale, shot to fame after a video showed him in tears when his father, Tom, playfully stole a chicken nugget from his box during a Wolverhampton Wanderers match.

The clip quickly spread on social media, drawing sympathy from nugget fans nationwide.

Aldi spotted an opportunity

The timing proved perfect for supermarket chain Aldi, which had just launched a search for its first Nugget Taster to celebrate the 164 million chicken nuggets sold in the past year.

Recognising Rory’s genuine passion for the subject matter, Aldi offered him a special “mini” tasting position. The job involves reviewing flavour, crunch, texture and enjoyment of products like Oakhurst Chicken Nuggets with Dips and Roosters Chicken Nuggets.

‘More nuggets for him, and none for me’ – dad

Rory’s dad, Tom Smith, a tree surgeon, said: “The response to the video has been incredible. Rory is delighted to be an official chicken nugget taster, it means lots more nuggets for him, and none for me. I’ll definitely think twice before stealing one again.”

Julie Ashfield, Aldi UK’s Chief commercial officer, added: “We had only just launched our search for our first official Nugget Taster when we saw Rory’s video, and it felt like perfect timing. His love for nuggets really struck a chord with people across the UK. We’re delighted to be replacing his stolen nugget tenfold.”

Rory joins competition winner Lorna Funnell, 35, from East Sussex, in the role.
