Tech advances from Ukraine key to Britain’s defence strategy
Combine these three:
- A digital targeting web – a network that allows the soldier, sailor, airman, sensor or drone to identify a target, immediately communicate its location and strike it. In simplistic terms, click on the target and the system will decide a weapon to target-match and enable you to prosecute it, iPhone app style.
- A drone centre – a centre of excellence that helps us learn lessons from Ukraine, develop our training tactics and procedures to integrate drones effectively and complement our existing and future systems.
- World-leading innovation in autonomy – doubling our investment in autonomous systems to boost our export potential. More resources, quicker development, better export potential.
Learning from Ukraine – and acting
This government is adopting the lessons from Ukraine and acting upon them.
This will transform how we fight with a high-low mix of capability to complement conventional platforms.
Hybrid Air Wings, ships supported by airborne, surface and subsurface uncrewed systems, aircraft supported by unmanned platforms and land formations enhanced by reconnaissance, FPV (first-person view) and bomber drones.
The speed of change is increasing
One of the reasons I left the military was dissatisfaction with the speed at which we were adopting lessons from Ukraine.
This SDR (strategic defence review) changes that … More to come. Watch this space.
