Binny Mathews brings her celebrated expertise to a three-day summer retreat open to artists of all abilities

Award-winning British portraitist Binny Mathews, an Associate of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, is to lead a three-day landscape painting course in the heart of Leicestershire this summer.

She is offering aspiring landscape artists the chance to learn from one of the country’s most celebrated practitioners.

The course will be held at Cowslip Meadows, a sustainable countryside retreat near Laughton on the outskirts of Market Harborough, running from June 29 to July 3.

Places are open to all, with a maximum of ten students to ensure personalised attention.

Kate Gilbertson-Hart, who runs Cowslip Meadows, said: “It is great that Binny has agreed to share her extensive talent and run the course.”

Rather than prescribing a single method, the course is designed to encourage exploration.

Gilbertson-Hart explained that participants will investigate the emotional and physical use of colour, mark-making, measuring, line, tone, chroma strength and composition, with Mathews offering demonstrations throughout to suggest differing approaches.

Each day begins with a group discussion before the main painting session.

Students are invited to bring examples of their own work in digital format for one-to-one sessions, allowing Mathews to tailor her tuition to individual needs.

Mathews teaches in oils but is happy to support any medium. Accommodation within walking distance of the venue can be arranged for those travelling from further afield.
