The centre will relaunch as Wolverhampton Dogs Home in summer 2027 after a major redevelopment aimed at improving welfare and rehoming outcomes.
Birmingham Dogs Home has temporarily closed its Wolverhampton centre as work gets under way on a £4.1 million refurbishment designed to transform the facility and improve the welfare of the dogs in its care.
The centre closed on Monday 12 October ahead of the works, which will create a modern facility with better operational flow, an improved visitor experience and a safer, calmer kennel environment to support rehabilitation and rehoming.
The charity has supported dogs and their owners across the region since 1892, and the redevelopment represents one of its largest ever investments in its facilities. It is intended to ensure the centre can continue caring for dogs for generations to come.
The centre is set to reopen in summer 2027 as Wolverhampton Dogs Home. It will remain part of the Birmingham Dogs Home family, while being more clearly signposted as a service for dogs across the Black Country and South Staffordshire.
The charity’s commitment to stray, abandoned and relinquished dogs will continue throughout the works. Dogs currently in its care have been relocated to the Birmingham centre, while the Wolverhampton site will operate at reduced capacity to receive and support local strays.
Sally Insley, Head of Income Generation at Birmingham Dogs Home, said: “We have cared for thousands of stray, abandoned and relinquished dogs over the years, and we know every dog deserves the best possible care.
“We’re so grateful to our generous supporters who have made this investment possible. This redevelopment will enable us to give vulnerable dogs the very best chance of a brighter future and ensure that Wolverhampton Dogs Home is equipped to meet growing demand, deliver the highest standards of welfare for the most vulnerable dogs across Wolverhampton and the Black Country for generations to come.
“We look forward to commencing with the construction works later this month and to sharing our exciting plans for the centre with our supporters.”
