Bradley Thomas MP has voiced his support for Bromsgrove Golf Club as it battles plans to redevelop its course into a sprawling housing estate.
Housing target increased by 85%
Following an 85% increase in the Government’s housing target for Bromsgrove, land at and around the club has been earmarked for 1,300 new homes in the district council’s draft Local Plan, now under public consultation.
The MP recently visited the course to meet with gentlemen’s club captain, Lee Machin, pledging to back the club’s resistance and urging residents to sign his parliamentary petition to safeguard greenbelt land.
Over 1,000 members
The club, which is open to the public and boasts more than 1,000 members, is believed to host the largest junior golf academy in England. It’s also home to over 25,000 trees and a range of wildlife including deer, herons and birds of prey.
Mr Thomas said: “Not only is the land unsuitable for development, it also makes no sense that, when the population of Bromsgrove is set to grow, the leisure facilities on offer are reduced.”
More than just a golf course
Lee Machin added: “The potential loss of Bromsgrove Golf Club would have a far-reaching impact on our community… this space isn’t just a golf course.”
