Birmingham technology firm marks four decades with major systems upgrade
One of Birmingham’s best-known technology firms has marked its 40th anniversary with a £1.8 million investment aimed at accelerating future growth.
Intercity, a UK-managed service provider, was founded in 1985 by Alan Jackson as a mobile phone specialist.
The company has now completed a major overhaul of its internal systems, replacing legacy platforms with an AI-powered ecosystem designed to support a £100 million turnover target by 2030.
The investment also includes upgrades across Intercity’s five UK sites in Birmingham, Bedford, Bolton, Nuneaton and Northampton, alongside the launch of a new technical training and cyber awareness academy. The firm says the improvements will create greener, smarter workplaces and strengthen skills development.

Intercity targets £100m revenue as managed services business expands
Intercity provides communications, managed IT and cyber security services to organisations including HORIBA MIRA, King’s Cross Business Park and Saïd Business School. Over the past three years, revenues have more than doubled from £25 million to £55 million, driven by organic growth and the acquisitions of Chandler Communications and Centrality.
The Centrality acquisition saw Intercity become a Microsoft First Managed Service Provider, responsible for running and securing customer Microsoft environments. Earlier this year, the company was also invited to join the Microsoft Intelligent Security Association, placing it among a small group of global cybersecurity specialists.
Chief Executive Charlie Blakemore said the anniversary was “the perfect time to put a real marker in the sand” for the business. He said the £1 million technology ecosystem investment would allow Intercity to scale while maintaining consultancy standards and service quality.
Birmingham base remains central to Intercity’s growth strategy
Group Chief Executive Andrew Jackson, the son of founder Alan Jackson, said Intercity remains firmly rooted in Birmingham after four decades in the city.
He highlighted Birmingham’s talent pool and enterprise culture, adding that the company is proud to be the official IT partner of both Edgbaston Cricket Stadium and Birmingham City Football Club. Intercity says the partnerships help ensure both venues operate as world-class, technology-enabled stadiums.
To mark its 40th anniversary, the company has also reaffirmed its environmental and social commitments, including planting 200 trees each year and renewing support for LoveBrum and Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Changemaker Programme.
Intercity has recently been named a Wired Trailblazer and Employer of the Year at the Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards 2025, reflecting its focus on workplace culture and cybersecurity innovation.
