System check scheduled
The UK government will carry out a nationwide test of its Emergency Alerts system on Sunday September 7 at 3pm.
Mobile phones and tablets across the country will emit a loud, siren-like sound and vibrate, accompanied by a message explaining that no action is required. The alert will appear on all compatible devices.
Safety tool explained
The Emergency Alerts system is designed to warn the public of life-threatening events, such as severe weather or other dangers nearby. Officials say routine testing is essential to ensure the system works as intended if ever needed in a real emergency.
Reassurance to public
The government emphasised that the test is not cause for alarm and that no response is necessary. More details about how the system works, and the types of emergencies it may be used for, are available at gov.uk/alerts.
