It’s quite easy to see how you can create a thriving city by embracing nature, if you start by considering the people of Birmingham.
Brum’s economy is ultimately built by the productivity of its people. And the productivity of Brummies is determined heavily by their state of mind.
Statistics tell us that, at any point in time, one in four of them are struggling with their mental health.
Nature increases health and wellbeing
Nature is not a miracle worker (or is it?), but the science clearly shows that, for example, listening to birdsong and watching butterflies dance across your path increases your happiness, health and wellbeing.
Not only that, if there were more singing birds and dancing butterflies around then that would indicate that our environment was healthier, helping Brummies to thrive.
It’s becoming easier to see the link between nature and Brum’s economy now.
600 green spaces across Birmingham
Seventy per cent of the world’s wildlife populations have vanished in my lifetime. Imagine if we could buck this rather depressing trend across Birmingham City Council’s 600 green spaces.
Brummies’ links to nature is directly connected to economic output
It’s easy to see that this would lead to huge savings on healthcare and other frontline services as well as greater income from tourism and inward investment.
Pride in Brum could reach the dizzy heights of Joseph Chamberlain’s day when it was proclaimed that Birmingham was the “best governed city in the world.” This would lead to greater civic action in the city, propelling Brum forward.
