Today, November 20, we pause to remember and honour the life and sacrifice of a brave soldier from the West Midlands: Sergeant John “Jonah” Jones, of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Eighteen years ago, on this day in 2005, Sgt Jones, aged 31 and originally from Castle Bromwich, was tragically killed by a roadside bomb in Basra, Iraq, whilst commanding a vehicle patrol.

A Dedicated Soldier, A Loyal Aston Villa Fan

Known affectionately as ‘Jonah’ to his comrades, Sgt Jones was a dedicated professional who joined the Army at the age of 16. His Commanding Officer described him as an “outstanding soldier, a wonderful husband and a loving father.”

Beyond his exceptional service, which included tours in Bosnia, Northern Ireland, and Kosovo, Sgt Jones was remembered for his charisma, compassion, and razor-sharp sense of humour. He was a keen sportsman—boxing for the Battalion and representing the Army at fishing—but his greatest passion was his family and his beloved football club. A committed Aston Villa fan, he was known to invite his platoon to his home to watch televised matches.

He left behind his loyal wife, Nickie, and his then five-year-old son, Jack.

As a community in the West Midlands, we stand with his family and friends, ensuring his courage and ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten.
