Created with clarity, not noise: a mobile app built without funding, a team, or growth mechanics.
A mobile app built independently in a matter of weeks, without funding, a team, or traditional growth mechanics, has been nominated for the Women in Tech Awards 2026.
SaltSwell, created by writer and filmmaker Sam Grierson, is a deliberately minimal mobile app built around filmed footage of British coastlines and natural sound. It offers a single, focused interaction, with no advertising, no user tracking, no push notifications, and no data collection.
The app was conceived, designed and launched by Grierson alongside existing professional commitments, in short, focused periods of work, with a tightly defined scope that did not expand. From initial idea to a live product on the App Store, the process took weeks.
Grierson said: “It started at 2am. I couldn’t sleep. I picked up my phone and found the same thing everywhere I looked: apps asking for more time, more input, more attention. I wanted something simpler and more intentional, so I built it.”
SaltSwell does one thing. It does it clearly, and it is free to use.
“I didn’t want to build a platform,” Grierson added. “I wanted to build one thing that worked, was finished properly, and didn’t treat the person using it as a resource to be mined. That was the whole brief.”
Building at 50, outside the standard model
At 50, Grierson sits outside the typical profile of a tech founder. SaltSwell was not built as a pivot into technology, but as an extension of an existing creative practice, applying storytelling and production discipline to product design and delivery.
The project was developed without external investment and without the infrastructure commonly associated with product development. It is not designed around engagement metrics, behavioural data, or time-on-device, and it is not intended to scale in the conventional sense.
The Women in Tech Awards nomination recognises not only the product itself, but the approach behind it: a clear idea, executed independently, and brought to market without a team.
“Tech often asks whether something can scale,” Grierson said. “I was asking something different: can I build something real, with clarity and focus, and get it out into the world?”
