Martin Lyndop said swimming three times a week at Sandwell Aquatics Centre has been a game-changer
A 72-year-old Birmingham man has credited swimming with helping him rebuild his life following the death of his wife.
Martin Lyndop lost his wife Carol, his soulmate of more than three decades, leaving him struggling with loneliness and a loss of motivation.
“She was so full of energy. We did everything together and for a while I struggled to cope,” he said.
A friend suggested Martin try the over-60s sessions at Sandwell Aquatics Centre (SAC) in Smethwick, one of eight facilities operated by Kore Wellness on behalf of Sandwell Council.
Though he had not swum regularly for years, he decided to give it a try last summer.
Martin said: “I was completely blown away. The size of the place, how clean it was, and the whole theatrical look of it. It’s stunning.”
‘You realise you’re not alone’
Swimming three times a week has helped Martin rebuild structure in his life, but it is the people who have made the biggest difference.
Through the sessions, he has met others who have been through similar loss and changes in their lives.
“We laugh, we talk about the old times, and we just enjoy being around each other,” he said.
“You realise you’re not alone.”
The centre’s coffee shop has become equally important, offering Martin the simple comfort of conversation he had deeply missed. Staff have also played a significant role in his recovery.
Martin added: “They’re always friendly and helpful, and they go out of their way to stop and chat. Coming here has brought me back to life.”
