Tomato Energy, the electricity-only supplier, has paused taking on new customers after its website crashed.

The cause, according to a Tomato insider, was a mention by the highly influential Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert founder, which drove tens of thousands of people to visit the firm’s website, which then buckled.

Tomato, headquartered in Basingstoke and with offices in Wolverhampton, said on its website: “We are temporarily not accepting new registrations or providing quotes for new customers. Please check back later for updates.”

A source at Tomato told WM News: “We had a massive rush of visitors to the website after Martin Lewis mentioned TE. The website crashed. So we’re re-launching. Not a bad problem to have, I guess.”

News of Tomato’s teething issues comes after the recent collapse of energy retailer Rebel Energy, which blamed soaring wholesale prices and hard-pressed customers for its demise.
