Final chance before deadline

War widows and widowers are being urged to move quickly to claim an £87,500 recognition payout before the scheme shuts in October.

Hundreds already helped

The War Widows Recognition Payment Scheme, launched in 2023, has already handed out more than £21 million to over 240 families. It was set up to fix an injustice faced by bereaved spouses who lost their military pensions if they remarried or moved in with a new partner before 2015.

Defence chiefs say applications have slowed to a trickle this year – but they believe some eligible families still haven’t come forward.

Minister’s plea

Veterans Minister Alistair Carns MP said: “This scheme has provided vital redress to those who have sacrificed so much for our country. With the scheme closing on 15 October, I urge anyone who believes they may be eligible to apply.”

The one-off, tax-free payment is available to widows, widowers, civil partners and long-term partners of soldiers, sailors and airmen killed in service before 2015 – provided they lost their pensions under the old rules and haven’t had them restored.

How to apply

Applications must be in before 15 October 2025. Full details and forms are on the GOV.UK website. Support is also available through the Veterans UK helpline on 0808 1914 218.

Ministers say it’s the last chance for bereaved forces families to get the recognition they deserve.
