Tanveer Ahmad Mohammed Bibi named Acorn’s West Midlands Taxi Hero for helping a woman in labour reach maternity care safely

2nd November 2026 – A Wolverhampton-based taxi driver who helped a pregnant woman reach hospital just in time for the birth of her baby has been named the West Midlands regional winner of the Acorn Taxi Hero Award.

Competing against over 1,700 nominees nationally, Tanveer Ahmad Mohammed Bibi has been recognised for helping an expectant mother reach the maternity ward urgently and safely after she went into labour, with her waters breaking shortly before they arrived.

Acorn Insurance, the UK’s largest taxi insurance specialist, launched the awards to celebrate the unsung heroes of Britain’s taxi industry – drivers who demonstrate exceptional acts of bravery, kindness and dedication for their passengers and communities, often without receiving the recognition they deserve.

A timely journey to the maternity ward

What began as a journey to hospital became a race against time when Tanveer took a pregnant passenger who was due to give birth to maternity care. With the woman needing to reach hospital urgently, he focused on getting her there safely.

According to his nomination, the passenger’s waters broke just before they reached the maternity ward. Tanveer completed the journey in time for her to receive care at the hospital, to the relief of her family.

The experience illustrates how an everyday taxi journey can suddenly become an important moment in a passenger’s life.

Tanveer’s nomination highlights the responsibility drivers can find themselves taking on when passengers need urgent assistance, and the difference a calm, safe journey can make at a critical time.

Tanveer Ahmad Mohammed Bibi, West Midlands regional winner, said:

“I’m delighted to have been named the West Midlands Taxi Hero. When I realised my passenger was so close to giving birth, the most important thing was to get her to the hospital safely and as quickly as I could.

“I was very relieved that we reached the maternity ward in time, and it meant a lot to know her family were happy and grateful. I’m proud to receive this recognition and to represent the West Midlands in the national awards.”

Ash Coakley, Head of Taxi Insurance at Acorn Group, said:

“Taxi drivers are often at the heart of their communities, and Tanveer’s experience shows how an ordinary journey can become something much more important.

“When his passenger needed to reach maternity care urgently, Tanveer helped ensure she arrived safely and just in time. It must have been a tense journey for everyone involved, and the family’s gratitude says a great deal about what his help meant to them.

“Tanveer’s story is a reminder of the care and responsibility taxi drivers show when passengers need them most. He’s a thoroughly deserving West Midlands Taxi Hero and exactly the kind of person these awards were created to recognise.”

Recognising those that go above and beyond

The winners were selected by a judging panel drawn from the taxi and insurance sectors.

Tanveer will receive a £100 Amazon gift card and is in the running for the national title, with the overall winner set to receive a £1,000 Amazon gift card and the inaugural Britain’s Taxi Hero trophy.

The national winner will be announced on Wednesday 11 November 2026.
