Societal pragmatism, a banking revolution and a push towards peace

As we stare down the barrel of 2026, the world appears poised for significant shifts across social, economic and geopolitical landscapes. Building on trends observed in 2025, the year ahead promises a resurgence of traditional values, a revolution in financial systems and tentative steps toward resolving entrenched conflicts.

These changes reflect broader global dynamics, where pragmatism increasingly edges out extremism, innovation disrupts outdated structures and bold leadership seeks to broker peace in turbulent regions.

Social conservatism to overtake ‘woke’ radicalism as the accepted norm

In the realm of social ideologies, social conservatism is set to solidify its dominance over what many perceive as “woke” hard-left radicalism in most Western nations, particularly in the US and the UK. This triumph will manifest not just in policy wins but in a cultural embrace of reasonable and robust debate with those holding opposing views. In the US, where ideological polarisation reached historic highs in 2025, with 37 percent identifying as conservative versus 34 percent moderate, expect continued electoral and societal pushback against progressive excesses.

The Republican Party’s strong favorability among conservatives, at 72 percent, underscores this momentum. In the UK, despite some surveys showing more progressive leanings on social issues, the overall trajectory points to a conservative resurgence, fueled by declining approval for left-leaning governments and rising polarisation on topics like gender policies. Globally, surveys indicate a subtle shift toward conservatism, with many respondents feeling they are becoming more conservative amid economic pressures and cultural debates.

By mid-2026, anticipate mainstream media and institutions fostering open dialogues, reducing echo chambers and promoting civil discourse as a antidote to division. This evolution will empower communities to address issues like education and family values without fear of cancellation, marking a mature phase in Western democracies.

Crypto’s influence can no longer be ignored: get on board or get left behind

Turning to finance, the traditional global banking system, reliant on the antiquated Swift payment network and fiat currencies, will face accelerated decline as frontier technologies usher in a new era. Cryptocurrencies such as XRP, alongside AI-driven innovations, are positioned to lead this transformation, offering faster, cheaper cross-border transactions. In 2025, Swift’s slow adoption of blockchain drew sharp criticism for lagging behind modern alternatives, highlighting vulnerabilities in legacy systems amid rising digital asset integration.

McKinsey’s Global Payments Report emphasised the role of digital assets and AI in reshaping payment rails, with cross-border trends focusing on speed and security. XRP’s potential in remittances and enterprise adoption is forecasted to surge, with analysts predicting substantial growth by 2030, starting with broader integration in 2026. Stablecoins and AI analytics will further erode fiat’s dominance, as seen in 2025’s policy reviews covering 70 percent of global crypto exposure. The message is clear: institutions and individuals must adapt or risk obsolescence.

Expect major banks to pivot toward hybrid models, incorporating crypto bridges and AI fraud detection, while regulators in key economies like the US accelerate frameworks to support this shift.

Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Nigeria – Trump to lead the charge for peace

On the geopolitical front, ongoing conflicts and human injustices in Ukraine, Sudan, Nigeria and Gaza will persist into 2026, yet a concerted global push for peace, spearheaded by Donald Trump and the United States, offers hope for resolutions.

In Ukraine, Trump’s negotiations with Russia aim to end hostilities, building on his 2025 promises despite criticisms of vagueness. Sudan’s civil war, marked by humanitarian crises, could see US-brokered deals, as Trump has already waded in. Nigeria’s internal strife, including insurgencies, may benefit from broader African stability efforts tied to Trump’s mineral-focused strategies.

In Gaza, following 2025’s fragile ceasefire and US involvement, expect incremental progress toward comprehensive deals, echoing Trump’s first-term proposals. Overall, Trump’s self-proclaimed peacemaker role, claiming to have influenced multiple conflicts, will drive multilateral talks, reducing violence though not eradicating root causes immediately.

Cautious optimism

In summary, 2026 heralds an era of conservative revival, financial innovation and cautious optimism in global affairs. These forecasts, grounded in 2025’s developments, suggest a world adapting to change with resilience and foresight.
